Lava Whorl Movie

A lava whorl is a feature found in submarine lava flows which have moderate to high effusion rates. In a highly effusive sheet flow, the edges of the flow may be slowed due to friction with a wall or older, solidified flow. Since the edges will then flow at a different rate, the inner part of the flow moves past the outer edges, causing formation of eddy-like rotational whorls.
