A broadband seismometer and a low-frequency hydrophone are being placed on a flat basaltic plateau at the Axial Seamount Central Caldera Site, awaiting connection to medium power J-Box MJ03F. On a follow-on dive a 4.6-km cable will be installed. This area is of particular interest because the caldera floor is rapidly being uplifted, suggesting that melt is migrating into the magma chamber below. This short-period seismometer was deployed on a flat sheet flow ~ 1.3 km east of the ASHES hydrothermal field in 2013. The black ball in the yellow circle shows that it is perfectly level, helping to insure that the highest quality data comes off of this network. Axial Volcano is likely to be quite seismically active and we are anxious to get the real-time data on shore next year. This will help us understand magma and fluid migration in the subsurface of the volcano...and eventually these data may help us predict an eruption. VISIONS'3, Leg 4. A test 3-D thermistor array (bottom right) that was installed last year rests on a diffuse flow site, covered in microbial filaments. This science pod was cut loose from the Axial Base Shallow Profiler mooring on Sunday morning and was throughly cleaned by an eager group of students. The growth visible on the pod comes after just one year in the water, and since many of the instruments on the pod require unobstructed intake lines for sampling, the pods must be replaced yearly.

During the port call for Leg 4 in Newport, Oregon, the UW-APL-built Shallow Winched Profiler was loaded onto the R/V Thompson. The system has an underwater level wind that "spools" out yellow cable, which will provide power and communications to an attached instrument "pod" (orange bulbous-shaped package bottom left). During the port call for Leg 4 in Newport, Oregon, the UW-APL-built Shallow Winched Profiler was loaded onto the R/V Thompson. The system has an underwater level wind that "spools" out yellow cable, which will provide power and communications to an attached instrument "pod" (orange bulbous-shaped package bottom left). An HPIES instrument deployed off the starboard side of the R/V Sikuliaq ~ 125 km offshore Newport Oregon near the base of the Subduction Zone. The instrument was released and free fell over 9000 ft to land softly on the seafloor - the extended legs insure a softer landing and that is stays nearly horizonatal as it travels throught the water column. This instrument utilizes a bottom pressure sensor, an inverted echosounder and a horizontal electrometer to provide insights into the vertical structure of current fields, near-bottom water currents, and water properties including temperature, salinity, and specific volume anomalies. The system's dock assembly near the seafloor includes an inductive battery-charging dock for the vehicle battery, an inductive communication system that provides communications during profiling, and a Wi-fi antenna that provides high-speed communications while in the charging dock. Currently, the seafloor is rising and this is believed to reflect the influx of magma into the core of the volcano.The instrument rests on a frozen lava flow - called a sheet flow. This custom instrument was developed by Bill Chadwick/PMEL.  It measures the inflation/deflation of the ground using a precision pressure instrument and a very precise tilt meter (measures in micro-radians) that enables detection of the volcano "breathing" as melt (magma) moves in and out of the chamber.
