Pillow lavas (also called pillow basalts) result from the quenching – or very rapid cooling and crystallization – of the outer portion of a small extrusion of lava. Continued extrusion breaks through one pillow and forms a new adjacent pillow. Striations may occur from the lava being scraped by the rough edges at the point of fracture and extrusion.
