My name is Bing Yu Lee, a junior majoring in geology and oceanography at the University of Washington. As an international student from Malaysia, I am fortunate to be born in a fishing family, which is where my connection to the ocean originates. Ocean and marine life have been a major part of my family for generations. While I love learning about the science behind the ocean, studying oceanography has allowed me to connect with my family from a different perspective. Visions’18 will be my very first research cruise experience out in the ocean and I am very excited to work alongside scientists at sea to learn more about geology in the ocean, especially methane seeps and hydrothermal vents, which make up my primary interests for this experience. Besides that, I am very passionate about meeting and talking to people from different backgrounds to learn more about different perspectives!
