Victoria deJong (Leg 3)

A late science bloomer, Victoria’s early work focused on social justice as she earned her Associate of Arts in Gender Studies in 2014. During her subsequent educational hiatus, she developed a career in the restaurant service industry and discovered passions for dancing, traveling and all things outdoors. Through avid self-study of her sister’s “borrowed” textbooks, she finally unearthed her scientific proclivities and sought to further social and environmental justice through accessible science communication. However, it was the day that she stepped upon a research vessel that she finally discovered what she wanted to be when she grew up—a sailor-scientist engaged in community-driven, coastal and oceanographic research. Today, Victoria is thrilled to be pursuing Bachelors of Science in Oceanography and Geoscience at the University of Washington.
