Octopus Squid

Octopus Squid (Octopoteuthis deletron)

Squid in the genus Octopoteuthis of the family Octopoteuthidae are one of two genera of squid that do not possess tentacles in their adult form, instead only having eight arms (thus the name "Octopus Squid"). They can be found at depths of 400 to 800 m (1,300 to 2,600 ft) in the Pacific Ocean, and grow to ~24 cm (9.4 in).

Octopoteuthis deletron is an ambush predator, with a lower metabolism than similar sized squid with an active hunting strategy. They are also able to break off their arms as a defense strategy, digging arm hooks into a predator and jetting away, leaving the arm in the predator’s skin.

Octopoteuthis deletron are common prey of northern elephant seals, and have also been found in the stomachs of giant grenadier and beaked whales.
