Calendar of Events

August 18th, 2026 07:24 local (Pacific): The Revelle is currently steaming to the Y Buoy off the coast of Newport. Upon arrival a pilot boat will meet us and lead the ship into port.

August 17th, 2026 21:56 local (Pacific): Jason Dive J2-1794 was aborted but arrived on deck  fine. This will be our last operation for the 2026 cruise. The Revelle will soon depart site to head for Newport.

August 17th, 2026 12:55 local (Pacific): Jason Dive J2-1793 is just underway to survey the status of the Shallow Profiler anchors and two cable legs at the Oregon Offshore Site. 

August 17th, 2026 11:17 local (Pacific): We are currently holding station at the Oregon Offshore site watching the weather. We will dive on one of the anchors ( ~ 600 m water depth) on the Shallow Profiler Mooring to examine the transponder connection.

August 17th, 2026 10:50 local (Pacific): The Revelle is continuing to hold station. The light on Jason is fixed and sourcing of parts is occurring for the suction pump. Additionally, the wind has picked up again which may impact which dive we are able to do next. 

August 17th, 2026 06:30 local (Pacific):  The Offshore Science pod was successfully recovered. The Revelle is holding station and the Jason team is fixing a light on the vehicle after a shark hit it.The team will install a suction pump on the vehicle to deploy a broadband seismometer caisson near the Primary Node PN1C, ~ 1 km away. 

August 17th, 2026 05:05 local (Pacific):  The Revelle is currently at Oregon Offshore site recovering the science pod after successfully recovering the science pod at Slope Base earlier.

August 16th, 2026 18:07 local (Pacific): The Revelle is continuing the transit to Slope Base. We anticipate arriving around 23:00 (local) this evening. Our dive at the site will be to recover the science pod at the Shallow Profiler Mooring. 

August 16th, 2026 06:26 local (Pacific): The HPIES is now on deck after a successful recovery and we have started our transit to Slope Base. This transit will take roughly 18 hours to complete.

August 16th, 2026 01:13 local (Pacific): We arrived on site at Axial Base and Jason (Dive J2-1790) is currently 2600 m down recovering an HPIES from the seafloor that was deployed in 2023.

August 15th, 2026 19:17 local (Pacific): Jason (Dive J2-1789) is almost on the seafloor at the Central Caldera site to recover the 50 m cable for the sonardyne FETCH transponder recovered last year. 

August 15th, 2026 16:43 local (Pacific): Jason is back on deck from a great dive to Skadi – acres of clams. The Revelle is about to start the transit to Central Caldera to recover a FETCH 50 m cable and look at a huge frozen whirl pool in an adjacent lava flow (Dive J2-1789). 

August 15th, 2026 11:05: local (Pacific): We have started our tour of the old lava channel. We will follow this channel to an old snow blower called Skadi.

August 15th, 2026 08:50: local (Pacific): Jason has begun a dive to turn a CTD and survey an old lava channel from the 2011 eruption.

August 15th, 2026 07:33: local (Pacific): The TRHPH and CAMDS were successfully deployed at the International District vent field during dive J2-1787.

August 14th, 2026 19:26: local (Pacific): Dive J2-1787 has started at International District vent field. We will be switching out a resistivity probe and a digital still camera.

August 14th, 2026 10:27: local (Pacific): Jason is descending for Dive J2-1786 and will be deploying instruments at vents in the International District Hydrothermal Field.

August 14th, 2026 09:38: local (Pacific): The Revelle arrived on station and Dive J2-1786 at the International District is about to begin. 

August 14th, 2026 08:32: local (Pacific): We just wrapped up Dive J2-1785 at Central Caldera. Our next dive sill start around 09:30 local and will be at the International District hydrothermal vent field. 

August 14th, 2026 05:51 local (Pacific): Dive J2-1785 is still underway. The last step will be to deploy the DUNKER. An acoustic instrument that will communicate with other instruments across the caldera.

August 13th, 2026 23:46 local (Pacific): Jason finished installing the high definition camera at vent site Mushroom and is now working on switching out MJ03F and its associated instruments (J2-1785).

August 13th, 2026 13:48 local (Pacific): After successfully deploying a CTD in Eastern Caldera for Dr. Bill Chadwick (OSU), Jason is now descending for Dive J2-1784 at ASHES hydrothermal field with the high definition camera in the undervator.

August 13th, 2026 08:30 local (Pacific): Jason is descending ~1500 m to the seafloor at the Eastern Caldera to swap out a CTD (J2-1783).

August 13th, 2026 05:38 local (Pacific): Jason is now back on deck after diving at ASHES. The Revelle will now transit to the Eastern Caldera where we will swap out another CTD (J2-1783).

August 13th, 2026 01:23 local (Pacific): Jason dive J2-1782 has commenced. During this dive, we will be placing a CTD on the seafloor.

August 12th, 2026 18:57 local (Pacific): After a smooth 17.5 hours transit, we are onsite at Axial Base. A deep CTD verification cast to 2600 m water depth is currently ongoing. We anticipate our first dive in the caldera of Axial Seamount will be just after midnight tonight. 

August 12th, 2026 09:32 local (Pacific): The Revelle is making good way to the base of Axial Seamount, with an anticipated arrival of 1445 PDT. Two CTD vertical casts will be completed once on site. 

August 11th, 2026 23:20 local (Pacific): The Revelle has begun an ~18 hour transit from Slope Base to Axial Base. Upon arrival, we will be performing two CTD casts for instrument verification.

August 11th, 2026 20:39 local (Pacific): The CTD has been deployed a second time. This time the deep cast will travel down to 2,890 m, which will take 2.5 hours to reach the bottom. 

August 11th, 2026 18:15 local (Pacific): The first of two CTD casts is underway at Slope Base. We will be completing a 220 m and a 2,890 m cast for instrument verification.

August 11th, 2026 12:22 local (Pacific): Jason is working at LJ01A, switching cables from the 2023 junction box to the 2026 platform, and doing cable management. When completed, it is about a 2 hour transit to the surface.

Following this dive, a shallow and deep CTD cast will be completed.

August 11th, 2026 08:46 local (Pacific): Jason is descending to 2900 m at the Slope Base site to turn the LJ01A junction box and take niskin samples.

August 11th, 2026 08:35 local (Pacific): The Revelle has been transiting for almost an hour to our next work site – Slope Base. We wil shortly be on station and Jason will go into the water for dive J2-1781 latched into the low power junction box LJ01A to swap out the platform installed in 2023.

August 11th, 2026 08:31 local (Pacific): The dive at Southern Hydrate Ridge was very successful with installation of the digital still camera. During the seafloor survey, numerous sites of bubble plume emissions were imaged, one quite intense as was blowing out sediment. Exposed methane hydrate was also documented.

August 10th, 2026 22:56 local (Pacific): Jason dive J2-1780 has just begun. We are diving at Southern Hydrate Ridge a methane hydrate seep. At this site we will be swapping a digital still camera and surveying the dynamic methane seep worksite.

August 10th, 2026 21:12 local (Pacific): The R/V Revelle is currently doing an EM124 survey for bubble plumes at Southern Hydrate Ridge. When it is complete, we will dive at the site to visually survey it and swap the digital still camera. 

August 10th, 2026 12:57 local (Pacific)Jason dive J2-1779 is ongoing at the Oregon Offshore site to swap the digital still camera.

August 10th, 2026 09:12 local (Pacific):Lots of inquisitive black cod swimming around during this dive. Common at this site.

August 10th, 2026 07:36 local (Pacific): Jason dive J2-1778 to deploy the Benthic Experiment Platform (BEP) and recover last year’s BEP at the Oregon Offshore site is underway.

August 10th, 2026 07:10 local (Pacific): The deep CTD cast is complete. APL engineers and Jason crew are now moving the Benthic Experiment Platform on the back deck in preparation for dive J2-1778.

August 10th, 2026 04:50 local (Pacific): The second CTD cast is currently underway. Water will be sampled from as deep as 600 m during this cast. Upon recovery, we will commence Jason dive J2-1778 to switch out the Benthic Experiment Platform.

August 10th, 2026 01:46 local (Pacific): After arriving at the Oregon Offshore site, we have begun our first of two CTD casts at this location.

August 9th, 2026 22:50 local (Pacific): We are beginning our transit from the Oregon Shelf to the Oregon Offshore location. This transit will take ~4 hours.

August 9th, 2026 20:18 local (Pacific): Jason dive J2-1777 is underway at the Oregon Shelf site to turn the zooplankton platform.

Following completion of this ~ 3 hr dive, the R/V Revelle will transit ~4 hours to the Oregon Offshore site. Here, a shallow (220 m) and deep (580 m) CTD will be completed for instrument verification. This will be followed by a dive to turn the Benthic Experiment Platform and the digital still camera. 

August 9th, 2026 16:49 local (Pacific): Jason dive J2-1776 is underway at the Oregon Shelf site to turn the digital still camera using the vehicles undervator to take the instruments to/from the seafloor.

August 9th, 2026 13:02 local (Pacific): Dive J2-1775 is underway at the Oregon Shelf site. We are deploying a refurbished Benthic Experiment Package (yellow instrumented housing) and replacing it with a new junction box model to keep instruments in "cleaner" water and also for ease in deployment. This site, at 80 m water depth, is notorious for strong currents and low visibility. 

August 9th, 2026 08:47 local (Pacific): We are ready to depart at 1000 to the Oregon Shelf site, about an hour steam. A pilot will join us through the channel. The first Jason dive is J2-1755 to turn the Benthic Experiment Platform.

August 6th, 2026 16:18 local (Pacific): The ROV Jason team finished loading onto the Revelle yesterday, and all of the APL containers and engineering equipment, RCA science lab materials, and OOI platforms were loaded onto the aft deck today. Personnel will be making their way to Newport over the next few days in preparation for kicking off the cruise on the 9th!

July 27th, 2026 12:11 local (Pacific): In preparation to mobilize aboard the R/V Revelle next week, nineteen 48-foot trucks full of scientific equipment are headed down to Newport, Oregon this week. Eight students will be joining the RCA science, APL engineering, and ROV Jason teams for the VISIONS ’26 expedition, which will leave port August 9th at ~1130.

May 19th, 2026 15:26 local (Pacific): Cruise preparation is underway, and gear is being assembled and tested in Seattle prior to shipping to Newport. Mobilization will begin on August 5th. More updates soon!
