Every year, as part of the UW experiential at-sea learning program called VISIONS, up to ~20-25 undergraduates participate on the Regional Cabled Array operations and maintenance cruise. The students learn about sea-going operations on global class research ships utilizing remotely operated vehicles that dive to up to 2900 m water depth while working on the RCA infrastructure. Student cohorts span nearly all disciplines at the University of Washington and come from myriad walks of life. For many, their time at sea is a life changing experience. Students work on research and engagement projects (Ocean 411) based on their cruise experience for a quarter to four years.
