This full-sized Junction Box frame was sucessfully deloyed and recovered in the International District Hydrothermal Field at Axial Seamount using the ROV ROPOS during the August 2011 VISIONS '11 expedition. During the VISIONS'13 cruise two fully built out medium-power J-Boxes will be deployed here that will provide power and communications to extension cables and sensors deployed at the vent sites. The sensors will include a digital still camera, mass spectrometer, fluid and DNA samplers, bottom pressure and tilt sensor, a temperature-chlorinity probe to measure boiling fluids exiting the vents, and a short-period seismometer.

Lineated sheet flows form when molten lava flows out from underneath the edge of a solidified crust. The lineations are a result of the crust scraping against the surface of the moving molten lava.

Hackly sheet flows form when the solidifying surface of the fast moving lava experiences so much deformation that the solidified surface begins to break apart and piles up on itself. The edges are very rough and sharp.

Pillow lavas (also called pillow basalts) result from the quenching - or very rapid cooling and crystallization - of the outer portion of a small extrusion of lava. Continued extrusion breaks through one pillow and forms a new adjacent pillow. Striations may occur from the lava being scraped by the rough edges at the point of fracture and extrusion.

To highlight the impacts of pressure and for relaxing downtime, it is a common tradition on ROV cruises to color styrofoam heads and cups and take them down to the seafloor. Styrofoam cups come up about 1 inch tall. This head has not yet been "shrunk" but will go down in a few days.
