Tim Crone gives the VentCam a fresh water rinse after it was recovered from the seafloor.
Giora hooks the floats that were attached to the VentCam with Jason. Once the floats were attached, the VentCam ascended to the surface and the ship moved to their location for recovery.

Sulfide worms wave in hot hydrothermal fluids near the top of the 17 m-tall chimney called El Guapo.
A calm, sunny day provided an optimal opportunity for conversion of Jason for drilling operations. The sampling sled was decoupled from the vehicle and the drill sled was reattached.
Monica Kerr-Riess, a graduate student at the University of Washington, examines a sample of a black smoker recovered from the ASHES Hydrothermal Field. Onshore she will look at the genetic signature of the microorganisms to examine their diversity.

Feathery blue cilliates thrive in a diffuse flow site at the base of the hydrothermal chimney "Escargot" in the International District hydrothermal field. Also visible in the background are limpets and snails and a red scale worm.

Tim Crone (standing on the Jason elevator) prepares his camera to be launched. The camera was deployed during J2-516 next to a hydrothermal vent in ASHES. The camera will be left on site for a few days and will be used to determine the flow rate of the vent it is aimed at. Photo by Carlos Sanchez

The Jason crew lowers Jason on to the drill sled that will be used to drill into a black smoker. Sensors will be placed into these drill holes in order to monitor temperature of the system and microbial communities within the walls of the vent. Photo by Carlos Sanchez
