In 2005, during the VISIONS]05 Expedition we used this elevator to transport microbial incubators to the seafloor designed to examine the upper temperature limits to life.

Black smoker in the ASHES Hydrothermal Field imaged during a detailed RESON bathymetric and video survey of the area as a potential node site for the OOI Regional Cabled Observatory. The porous walls of the chimney leak hydrothermal fluids which support dense colonies of tubeworms and limpets.

Captain John directs the crane operator during the elevator deployment.

This platform called an elevator is a simple way to send instruments and sampling devices to the bottom of the ocean during ROV operations. The yellow spheres contain the floats that enable the elevator to come back to the surface when an acoustic signal is sent from the ship for the platform to do so. During this deployment, a USBL beacon (one Jason's navigational tools) is being lowered for calibration before we begin our dives at Axial Seamount. Photo by Katherine Turner and Carlos Sanchez.

Mark and En practice getting into their Gumby suits during the safety meeting prior to transiting to Axial Volcano.

Giora fully zipped into his survival suit. In the cold waters of the NE Pacific these are critical pieces of safety equipment on the ship and it is important to practice getting into them quickly.

The Sentry van is loaded onto a truck for shipping back to Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution.

Giora Proskurowski tries on his gumby suit during the safety meeting.

The R/V Thompson briefly docked at Hatfield Marine Science Center in Newport, OR for a personnel transfer and to offload the AUV Sentry.

We woke up to a quiet, misty morning in Newport Oregon.
