Mitch Elend

School of Oceanography Research Scientist

Mitchell Elend is an Oceanographer in the School of Oceanography at the University of Washington. He spent several years in the Coast Guard and is a graduate of the UW. As part of the OOI Regional Cabled Array Team, Mitch is the lead for archiving of all cruise data, processing of bathymetic data, and participates on all sea-going operations. He specializes in processing video and still imagery collected by submersibles and remotely operated submarines. His past works include image mosaics of hydrothermal vent structures, the most noted of which is a 139-image composite picture of Faulty Towers, a hydrothermal vent complex in Endeavour’s Mothra Field. His mosaics have been featured on the cover of Nature and Science journals, and in National Geograhic books.
