Julia Sandke Blog Leg 1
Julia Sandke is pursuing a B.S. in Environmental Science at Queens College in NYC, after previously receiving a BFA in Dance in 2018 from The University of the Arts in Philadelphia. She decided to return to school to participate in the research that is guiding adaptation and conservation choices as our climate changes, especially as regards marine habitats. She has worked in a geochemistry lab studying mineral-water interfaces while assisting on projects focused on carbon sequestration, contaminant remediation, and ocean acidification. Julia is especially interested in marine biology and ecology and is excited to return to Axial Seamount to learn about the geology and biodiversity on the seafloor around hydrothermal vents. She enjoys working as a peer mentor at Queens College, guiding other undergraduates through their courses in geology and environmental science. In her spare time, Julia still dances and loves to find overlaps between science and art.
